Why isn’t my Botox working?
Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox, is used within aesthetic medicine to relax dynamic and static lines related to ageing, as well as slimming facial muscles and creating a “lift” in treated muscle groups.
Botox has been used for this purpose for over 30 years and there are increasing reports of patients finding their treatment not working as it should.
Before anybody panics, the commonest reasons for Botox treatment not working as expected are practitioner dependent such as dosage or injection technique, or occasionally poor aftercare compliance by patients.
In some rare cases however, unlucky individuals can develop a resistance to botulinum toxins.
Botox resistance, also known as treatment tolerance, can occur when a person's body develops a reduced response to the neurotoxin over time. This may be influenced by factors like frequent injections, variations in individual metabolism, or the development of antibodies against Botox. If you suspect resistance, it's essential to consult with your healthcare provider, who can evaluate your situation and recommend appropriate adjustments or alternative treatments.
For patients finding themselves in this position - or if patients don’t want treatment with botulinum toxin - there are several alternative treatments to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. Skin boosters, PRP, microneedling and dermal fillers can all help. For individual recommendations, book an appointment with the face clinic team!
